For me, some days are easier than others when it comes to writing, and if you’re reading this, I’m sure you can relate.
I have specific goals I want to meet for myself in terms of what I create. However, the constant ebb and flow of ideas, motivation, and creativity can really get in the way of those goals.
Recently, I journaled a list for myself of all the things that help me to get into my creative headspace and stay there. I bookmarked it in order to be able to go back to it when I feel stuck. I hope it helps you, too! ๐
- Create a comfortable space. Make it clean and tidy, light a candle or start your diffuser, and use good lighting! For me (and for you if you are also a Highly Sensitive Person) this step is key.
- Limit distractions. Put your phone away, turn it off, or leave it in another room. Use your office or spare room instead of your dining room table to do your work. Turn your notifications off on your smart watch. The Forest app helps me concentrate when I find myself continually (mindlessly) picking up my phone in moments of creative struggle or boredom.
- Use inspiring/exciting mediums and stimuli. Haptic and tactile feedback is important to me as a creative HSP. The experience of writing is so much more enjoyable for me if I’m using a pen and a journal that I absolutely love, or a keyboard that feels just right (I know you feel me). Great music truly makes a difference, as well!
- Write down ideas as they come throughout the day. Keep a note on your phone or paper and a pen in your purse.
- Schedule a time to create and STICK TO IT. Do not rely on motivation; it’s constantly coming and going. Set a routine and remember that appointments and dates with yourself are just as important as scheduled time with other people. You are worth keeping promises to yourself.
- Get other distracting items crossed off your to-do list first if you think they will get in the way of your creative space. If you keep noticing the dust on your desk or the dirty dishes in your sink, or continue to be bothered by the fact that you forgot to call your mom back last night, allot yourself a set amount of time before you enter your creative space to get those distracting things taken care of. Be careful that this doesn’t become an obsessive time-suck to avoid your work.
- Prep your space the night before. It’s SO enjoyable to slide into that cozy, welcoming space anytime you want to.
- Do your morning pages every day. See my previous post on the importance of morning pages!
- Have a place to write down distracting thoughts as they come. Keep a notepad next to your easel or computer, and when something unrelated to your task pops into your mind, jot it down, let it go, and get back to creating.
